Glocal by ecover

Glocal is Ecover’s experimental project exploring the production of cleaning products from local 'waste', using local manufacturing processes and global knowledge. The end goal is to make this project commercially viable and to develop the ultimate sustainable business model for the emerging bio-economy.
Glocal is currently being tested in Mallorca. Why Mallorca? Because the island makes it very easy to define ‘local’, it has abundant natural resources (both renewable energy and waste from agriculture, e.g. citrus and olives) and is a huge consumer of cleaning products (thanks to its massive tourism industry). Currently, Mallorca imports much of what it needs to support its tourism industry, and the environmental and social consequences are beginning to show. There is a clear need for local solutions that don't compromise the natural environment - which is one of the main reasons people visit the island in the first place.

Combined strategies

Circular Value Creation Strategies

  • Material Recycling
    Material Recycling

The valorization of industrial production residues or materials from end of life products into the same or other production chains

  • Reuse

The common use of a product  (or product parts) spread over sequential timeframes.

  • Resource efficiency
    Resource efficiency

Decreasing the amount of material used for a given product.

  • Substitution

Replace scarce / toxic / high impact material with more sustainable alternative.

Value Proposition Strategies

  • Branding (eco/premium)
    Branding (eco/premium)

Enabling a price premium by highlighting/guaranteeing quality and or environmental claims (e.g. certificates, environmental stewardship,...).

Value network strategies

  • Localisation

Organizing the physical flows of resources and products on a local scale (e.g. enabled by local 3D manufacturing, decentralized loop closure,....).

  • Value network collaboration
    Value network collaboration

Collaboration between different companies / government bodies, local communities, NGOs throughout the value network to achieve a common goal
